The Federal Authority for Government Human Resources (FAHR) recently held the first HR Club Forum 2017, entitled “Year of Giving- Enriching Volunteerism & Corporate Social Responsibility”, under the patronage of HE Abdurrahman Al Owais, Minister of Health and Prevention, Chairman of the Authority, and the presence of HE Dr. Abdurrahman Al Awar, Director General of the Authority, and more than 150 Club members and associates.

The Forum highlighted His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan declaration of 2017 as the “Year of Giving”, sharing success stories both from individual and organizational prospective in the domain of charity work and volunteering.

Hosted by the Forum, moderated by broadcaster Ahmad ibn Majid, were HE Maitha Al Habsi, Deputy Chief Executive Officer of Emirates Foundation, HE Awatif Al Harmoudi, General Manager - Operational Control & Processes at Emirates Islamic, and HE Khalifa Bin Hindi, founder of 1971 Social Enterprise.

Maitha Al Habsi: Sheikh Zayed instilled values of giving, volunteering and humanitarian work

In her speech, HE Maitha Al Habsi, Deputy Chief Executive Officer of Emirates Foundation confirmed that community service and charitable work must be inspired by a genuine desire to aid the needy and make a difference in their lives. She stressed the need for formally tasking government agencies with educating public and private sector institutions, as well as members of the community about the importance of humanitarian and voluntary work, overseeing allocation of donations to recipients inside and outside the country, and prioritizing volunteer efforts to address community needs.

She said: “All members of the community who are interested in volunteering or doing humanitarian and charity work must choose the right time and place. The culture of giving is rooted in the UAE society and the late His Highness Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan was keen to instill the culture of volunteering and humanitarian work ​​in the sons and daughters of the homeland.

“The UAE is has become one of the world's leading countries in  humanitarian and charitable work, thanks to the directives of our wise leadership represented by His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, and His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, UAE Vice President and Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai."

Awatif Al Harmoudi: home, school, and the media are responsible for establishing the values ​​of charitable giving

For her part HE Awatif Al Harmoudi, General Manager - Operational Control & Processes at Emirates Islamic, praised the initiative of His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan regarding declaration of 2017 “Year of Giving”, pointing out that charity is not limited to just raising funds to help the needy.

She reviewed Islamic Emirates’ experience in the field of philanthropy, referring to the Emirates Charity Fund established by the Bank recently, which provided financial assistance amounting to nearly 50 million dirhams, allocated in part to pay off the debts of insolvent prisoners within the UAE, in addition to assisting needy families. She indicated that the Fund is also used to support small businesses run by Emirati youth by providing start-up capital.

“The media must play a role to raise awareness about the importance of charity and volunteer work, and shed light on some good examples locally, regionally and globally in this respect. Similarly, educational organizations and families have an an important role in spreading awareness about volunteering”, she said.

Khalifa Bin Hendi: Year of Giving will be a milestone in UAE’s history

HE Khalifa Bin Hindi, founder of 1971 Social Enterprise,  that the Year of Giving is a landmark in the history of the UAE, stressing its importance in terms of establishing the values of giving and volunteerism,  not only in the UAE, but also in the whole world, as every citizen and resident can participate to make a difference in the lives of others.

He highly valued charitable efforts being made by public sector institutions and some private organizations, hoping for more endeavors in this vital field, focusing on the neediest segments of society. 

A review of Authority’s charity initiatives 2017

The last speaker at the Forum was Hanan Bin Nassif, Deputy Director of Government Communication Department in the Authority. She reviewed FAHR community initiatives during 2016, and those planned for 2017 at the Federal Government level, pointing out that FAHR will be launching  a series of initiatives during the current year in conjunction with the announcement of His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan 2017 as “Year of Giving”, and after the remarkable success achieved by the Authority during the last period in terms of the launch and implementation of several community-based initiatives.

She stated that the Authority aims through community-based initiatives to consolidate the concept of volunteering ​​and charitable work within and outside the state, by involving the largest number of Federal Government employees, and foster a spirit of social responsibility, loyalty and happiness. “The Authority has been keen to involve the ministries and federal entities in implementing the package of community initiatives and explore the impact of these activities on its voluntary and charitable commitment, through a questionnaire circulated to all Federal Government employees via the human resources management information system in the federal government, "BAYANATI”, she added.

She said that the online survey saw significant reaction and turnout by the Federal Government employees who demonstrated a high sense of social responsibility, and great awareness of the importance of the role played by community and humanitarian initiatives in promoting the spirit of giving, tolerance and cohesion among all groups and members of the community.

Hanan Bin Nassif pointed out that 625 employees from various ministries and federal agencies participants in the survey, and proposed the implementation of a package of charitable and humanitarian initiatives within and outside the country. The most important suggestions focused on  supporting the needy families, providing financial and moral support for people with special needs, establishing a charity market to sell donations given by members of the community under the supervision of one of the charities operating in the country, conducting periodic visits to orphanages and elderly care homes, and organizing recreational activities for them. Other suggestions related to launch of a campaign to vaccinate children in some poor countries, construct mosques and digging water wells, and blood donation.

75% of participants are current or former members of charitable organizations.

The Deputy Director of the Government Communication Department said:  “75% of respondents were active members or had been members in one of the charities operating in the UAE. 83% of them were willing to be involved in volunteer work to serve the UAE citizens and residents, and 63% of respondents expressed a desire to incorporate employee volunteer hours during the year as part of employee performance management system”.

She pointed out that 59% of Federal Government employees involved in the online poll had already participated in charity activities inside and outside the country, revealing that the Authority was set to prepare a list of participants who are interested in doing volunteer work.
