Osama Al Zu'bi: artificial intelligence will eliminate 73 million jobs in the coming years

Osama Al Zu'bi, Chief Technology Officer, Cisco Middle East and Africa addressed the form saying that innovation has played a significant role in making huge and rapid changes our lives. He cited the four industrial revolutions as an example.

He said: "The first industrial revolution was based on water power and steam engines for the production of mechanics, while the second relied on electric power to create mass production. The third industrial revolution stated in early twentieth century, which saw the emergence of microelectronics, and the power of computers in manufacturing, leading to utilization of information technology to automate production. Currently the fourth industrial revolution has begun, based on the third, since the middle of last century, relying on modern technology and artificial intelligence techniques”.

He said modern technology - especially Internet and Internet of Things -  has become an integral part of our daily lives, with 3.6 billion people using the Internet around the world out of 7.6 billion people living on the planet. This figure is expected to rise to five billion users over the next five years.

"Artificial intelligence technology will have a huge and direct impact on global markets, which will lose 73 million jobs over the next few years," said Cisco's Chief Technology Officer, Middle East and Africa, adding that the global average age of companies has dropped dramatically over the years to 15 years, as a result of the inability of many of these institutions to innovate and keep abreast of the rapid changes and developments in the global markets.

He reviewed Cisco's experience in innovation based on creating a business environment conducive of generating new ideas, building diverse teams from the region and the world, giving them the opportunity to think creatively, and opening questions that would make a qualitative difference in the way they work and bring innovative ideas.

Al Zu'bi reviewed Cisco's experience in the region. Cisco Innovation and Experiment Centre has benn created as a comprehensive innovation centre integrating industry, education and government sectors, and an ideal platform for exploring what digital transformation can achieve in many sectors including retail, hospitality, healthcare and education, and financial services, with a plan to transform the centre into an incubator for emerging, small and medium enterprises.
