FAHR trains heads and coordinators of Occupational Health & Safety in the Federal Government

Sunday August 14, 2016

The Federal Authority for Government Human Resources (FAHR) has recently concluded in its Dubai office, a training workshop, targeting Occupational Health & Safety (OHS) team leaders and coordinators in a number of ministries and federal entities, in order to develop their skills in areas related to occupational health & safety at the work environment.

In this regard, HE Aisha Al Suwaidi, Executive Director of Human Resources Policies, FAHR, explained that the workshop held FAHR, in collaboration with a leading training institution and member of “Ma’arerf” initiative, aimed at familiarizing participants with ways to create a better work environment that meets the needs and requirements of employees and customers alike as well as enhance the efficiency of health and safety coordinators and team leaders. She stressed that the application of health and safety standards in the workplace has many benefits, namely increasing institutional efficiency, reducing the potential risk, including workplace injuries and accidents in order to ensure the achievement of functional well-being, improve employee performance and increase productivity.

She noted that the workshop follows a series of similar workshops organized by FAHR on a monthly basis for upgrading the capabilities of health and safety coordinators and team leaders in the federal government and promoting occupational safety and health concepts, to ensure  optimum application of the principles and guidelines of OHS Manual applied in the federal government, which was launched in late 2015; in order to support health and safety levels at different work sites in the ministries and departments of the federal entities.

HE Aisha Al Suwaidi said that OHS Manual has been designed and introduced in the Federal Government following in-depth study of the best international practices in this field, to develop a compliance framework in the ministries and federal entities, so that they can take the necessary preventive measures and create a healthy and safe working environment for all employees and customers based on global standards.

For her part, Moza Al Serkal, HR expert, FAHR, reviewed the important issues tackled by the workshop presenter, most notably: how to identify work activities which may cause injury to employees, ways to detect signs and symptoms of injury in early stages and importance of documenting these symptoms and signs.

She called on all ministries and federal bodies working in an environment that needs special health and safety measures to develop effective regulations in this regard.

“Compliance with health and safety standards at work supports the efforts and directives of the UAE’s wise leadership in establishing the concept of happiness and positivity in the work environment, to maintain safety of employees, strengthen their belonging and improve individual and institutional performance”, she added.

She explained that the role of the Federal Authority for Government Human Resources regarding the implementation of OHS Manual in the Federal Government in the next stage is to: follow up with the ministries and federal bodies, determine appropriate levels of health and safety in these entities, monitor compliance with standards, ensure raising awareness of employee about their responsibilities regarding the content of OHS Manual

Regarding the role of ministries and federal entities in the implementation of OHS Manual, Moza Al Serkal stressed that they must establish a culture of occupational health and safety among employees by forming cross-functional skilled teams to provide the necessary training and professional certification. The teams will also provide guidance and coordinate implementation of OHS Manual among various departments, including periodic workplace inspection to ensure accuracy and relevance of health and safety measures at all workplaces.

OHS Manual Overview

The Occupational Health & Safety Manual applied in the Federal Government consists of seven chapters, and aims to protect employees, customers and visitors from potential workplace injuries and incidents. The manual provides mandatory standards and conditions for a safe workplace in which each individual has a right to an environment which will not adversely affect his or her health and safety. This will require raising workers’ awareness about the hazards involving office work by capacity building programs and specialized training in occupational health and safety across the Federal Government institutions.
